General information

MAIN IDEA
500 years ago, the first collective execution for witchcraft took place in Auritz: the satanic sect had just been 'discovered' in Navarre, and the condemned were given an exemplary punishment: death by hanging and subsequent burning of the corpse. That condemnation was the beginning of a persecution that lasted a whole century, in which thousands of people were persecuted and unjustly condemned.
What is hidden behind that thick smoke?
Together we will try to shed light on this dark historical process.

BRIEF SYNOPSIS
Our working hypothesis is that the satanic sect was an artificial construct of the European intellectual elite, a legal engineering of both secular and religious courts: the demonic witchcraft in question was merely the necessary alibi to ‘terrorise the people’. (Francisco Peña, ‘Manual de los Inquisidores’, 1578), that ‘wicked people, on whom you have duly taken revenge’ (Sonnet of Judge Jean Espagnet to Pierre De Lancre, ‘Tableau de l'inconstance’, 1612).
This effective machinery pulverised the community spirit, prevented any possibility of popular leadership, imposed the politics of invisible presence and the pedagogy of fear: no one was free from being accused, and, in turn, anyone could denounce anonymously …
And, as abruptly as it began, the manhunt ended with the Edict of Silence, the masterpiece of the Council of the Supreme Inquisition. We have lived in this secret decree for the last 400 years.

Main features and goals of the crowdfunding campaign

In the regions that were most severely punished by the witch-hunt, a rereading of the narrative of that atrocious persecution is taking place right now. These mountain regions have preserved, encrypted in their ancestral myths, messages that transmit the truth that has been silenced over the centuries.

We want to give voice to this path of discovery, alongside local activists and international experts, and to contribute unexpected conclusions. We are also working to redress injustice. In Zugarramurdi, we are helping to remove the insulting icon installed in the square; in Senpere, we are helping to restore the good name of the repressed women; in Anotzibar, we are backing the representation in which the inquisitor is burnt, and not the witch.

Visually, our proposal is innovative. The narration of this journey will merge historical recreations with drawn images that will bring the stories to life. This technique will allow us to connect with the testimonies of the people concerned, and to reinforce them with interviews with recognised eminences in the field (Natalia Silva Prada, William Monter, Sophie Houdard, amongst others).

Why this is important

What image do we have of the witch? What do we transmit to new generations in stories, town squares and celebrations? Does this image come close to historical reality? Does it do justice to the thousands of people unjustly hunted, punished and forgotten? Can we imagine another representation that is more honest with the truth?

Shall we put it into practice?

We unravel the intricacies of a persecution, the scale of which surpasses anything imagined until now. We give a voice to those who were deprived of it, and we give back the dignity stolen from them, breaking the ‘damnatio memoriae’ imposed. We join the growing movement for the reparation of historical memory.
Our project is aimed at all audiences who are neither specialised nor particularly interested in history, but who connect with the search for the stubbornly denied truth.
