Personnel Costs - Minimum Team
We would have three people in the team hired on a 4h/day basis, which in its total cost (Social Security included) per year. Their tasks consist of writing and editing articles, translations, social networking, subscription management and community service, among others.
The Uni Climática
In addition to informing, the media must be trained. The Uni Climática, whose first edition took place in July 2020, is an essential tool to disseminate information about global warming. We are already planning the edition that will take place next summer and will have a minimum of 15 papers, all of them paid (150 euros each). The recording, editing and management of the videos will cost 2,000 euros. The management of registration and student care is an additional cost of approximately 1,000 euros.
Design and layout
The team at Climática works not only on the digital edition but also printed edition and the different publications we edit. We have a designer who can develop a graphic line according to what we do so far. He is also in charge of the layout of the Yearbook (news selection).
Climática advocates quality content with visuals, graphics, illustrations and writing, so a fair and adequate payment to our network of journalists, photographers and illustrators - who suffer in an increasingly precarious media landscape - is essential to the project.
The crowdfunding campaign is designed to also serve to promote and disseminate the work of 'Climática', including its articles. Communication tasks include the design of promotional materials, social networks and attention to the community and sponsors.
Increased working hours of the editorial staff
We would extend the hours of the contracts of the people who make 'Climática' possible.
Climática advocates quality content in collaboration with other committed photographers, illustrators and journalists, both nationally and internationally. That is why a fair and adequate payment to our network of journalists, photographers and illustrators - who suffer in an increasingly precarious media landscape - could expand the quality of the materials we generate.
Collaborations with other media in international reporting or coordinated actions with other international media require an extra effort for our team and translation support would be ideal.
The crowdfunding campaign is designed to also serve to promote and disseminate the work of 'Climática', including its articles. The extra communication tasks linked to reach a European scope and beyond.
In this new stage, we must redesign the Climática website to make it more attractive and navigable. We will create new sections and visually enhance the existing ones (daily weather news, podcast, videos). We also want to bet on data visualization. Depending on the amount collected in the minimum we can introduce a part of the best necessary (in that case the cost would be up to 5,000 euros counting that we reach the optimum).
Commission of 5% of Goteo for the provision of the service and 2% for bank commissions and expenses over the minimum achieved.

In the optimal improvements of the web and the more powerful side of our digital edition we want to bet on the data visualization. Depending on the amount collected, we can introduce all the necessary improvements

Climática Magazine (printed and digital yearbook)
This item covers the costs of collaborations, design and printing of the first Climática Magazine, a publication that will also be published on paper under ecological criteria. Of course, the paper will be produced from forests managed with sustainability criteria, so it will have FSC certification. The minimum print run will be 2,000 copies, but it will depend on the number of sponsors.
Taking into account that the printed edition has an additional cost of postal delivery.
The Uni Climática (Extended)
The Uni Climática organized in July 2020 had almost 600 people enrolled. Its good reception made us consider the possibility of 'giving it away' to teachers from public schools who wanted to use these training contents for their classes. If we get the optimal amount we can have more lectures and specialists. It will also allow us to assume the cost of disseminating the sesinoes and make it available free of charge to more students and teachers of public education.

A report by the United Nations Intergovernmental Science and Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) warns that the very same human activities that lead to climate change create the risk of pandemics.”
This was the news we published in 'Climática' last October 29th, shortly before launching this micro-finance campaign. This reaffirmed us even more: We need a media that informs and trains people with rigor about the climate emergency. We also need it to do so in an understandable way, without provoking alarms or eco-anxiety. And, above all, we need it to be independent, not financed by the companies that profit from the activities that contribute the most to global warming.
This media already exists. Climática, the first independent and professional newspaper in Spain specialized in the causes and consequences of global warming, was born in May 2019. After several years of dedicating special attention to it on the pages of lamarea.com, we decided to go a step further. If all the scientific evidence placed climate change as the most important news of our time, it was necessary to launch a media specifically dedicated to address this question
Even so, before launching a headline of this kind, we asked ourselves many questions: Why hasn't any great media ever done this before in these latitudes?
Another question was: will there be so much to tell, will we be able to publish news about global warming on a daily basis? A year later we have an answer: yes. And many more than we had expected. In Climática we summarize the daily news in our selections of climate news, of which we have already published more than 300. We have also disseminated more than 350 original articles, which include reports, interviews and forums. And we have translated more than 30 articles that, due to their special relevance, we consider of interest to our readers. We have taken advantage of our time.
And, above all we have paid attention to the awakening of many consciences about the need to act to alleviate the climate crisis. During the last year we have witnessed the evolution of youth movements (and not so young groups), which have managed, along with the efforts of other social sectors, to place climate change at the top of the political agenda.
COP25 was a turning point for Climática. The climate summit that was to be held in Chile ended up taking place Madrid. And there we went. From IFEMA we reported every day on what was happening in the negotiations, which were not advancing at the necessary pace, as it was being denounced from the Social Summit, to which we also paid a lot of attention. And that day we did not sell our cover to any energy oligopolies. We have never done so, nor do we intend to do so.
With many new learnings and our heads full of ideas, we began 2020. The fires in Australia gave us clues about an unflattering future. We had conferences in preparation, investigative reports waiting for their time to be developed... But the damn virus arrived.
But it didn't frighten us. We changed the physical classrooms for the virtual ones. That's how La Uni Climática was born. More than 50 specialists and groups made their knowledge available to the almost 600 people who registered. And we created more than 70 videos, generating more than 30 hours of training.
The coronavirus has taken many things and too many lives. It also blurred the climate information. Other issues turned out to be in the spotlight. Today we know that this is a serious mistake. The United Nations itself has just confirmed it. That is why we need a specialized media that does not lose that focus.
In Climática we want to continue telling what is happening and what we can do to alleviate the effects of global warming, to mitigate them and adapt to them. We continue to report on increasingly extreme weather phenomena, with consequences as terrible as the fires in California; we also analyze why an African mosquito makes people sick in Andalusia or Extremadura; what is going to happen to our crops; and what books and films can help us learn without causing us paralyzing anxiety.
As a person close to Climática says, “we have a lot done, but there is still a long way to go". For our part, we have put all our eagerness and energy during these months to build a first alarm clock. From now on, it will work only if you help us to wind it up. And we say "wake up" in good conscience: we will never accept a euro from the energy companies or the banks that finance the fossil fuel business. Therefore, it is essential to have your support.
Main features and goals of the crowdfunding campaign
We have demonstrated that climate information has a path. We have analyzed that some of the greatest socio-political conflicts of our time are played out in this field. We have verified what Naomi Klein said: "This changes everything". We have told it in our network profiles, in a weekly newsletter, on our website, together with our colleagues from Carne Cruda, in the weekly Atxe cartoons... But we want to do much more and better.
With your support, we will consolidate this media: we will improve the website, we will be able to order reports, provide them with more audiovisual content, prepare a new edition of La Uni Climática and small format training workshops.
And, finally, we will be able to publish the Climate Magazine -in digital and paper versions- with unpublished topics in depth, thoroughly and carefully illustrated. Once a year we give all-out in a publication that will make you travel around the planet (with hardly any emissions) and that you will want to keep to consult it more than once.
We will also ensure what you have told us that works: we will continue to select the most outstanding climate news of the day. Every week, you will receive our newsletter. We will expand our collaborations and continue to inform you from the airwaves along with Carne Cruda with our head writer, Andreu Escrivà (author of Y ahora yo qué hago / Capitan Swing, 2020).
We set the table to build this media, but now it's time to cook together if we want to taste good information, without greenwashing, with independence and with science as the only reference. To make all this possible we need a base of 1,000 subscriptions. But we will make it easy for you if you don't want to commit to this relationship. Reasons to donate to the campaign
- For a digital edition and paper one, recycled. Every week we will publish in-depth reports on the web, but we will give all-out in our annual magazine. The Climate Magazine will transport you around the world through its reports, its photos, its articles... It's like travelling, but with hardly any emissions.
- For small format courses. We want to promote training in climate issues, in digestible formats. In addition to the big sessions of La Uni Climática, we are going to launch agile workshops on specific issues. We are already preparing some thematic workshops on ecofeminism.
- Helping us to continue adding Correspondents. If the threat is global, so must be the information. We are allied with other international media to make better journalism. We have agreements with DeSmog in the UK. We have also been part of large news networks like Covering Climate Now, promoted by the British newspaper The Guardian for the last UN summit, when we shared resources with hundreds of media outlets around the world.
- Are you questioning whether you are listening to it? Maybe it's your conscience. That voice telling you to do something now for the planet isn't your imagination, it's our podcasts. We started in 2019 with a small weekly section on Carne Cruda. This year we continue in the Independent Republic of Radio, now with a larger monthly section by Andreu Escrivà. Our favorite broadcaster fills us with arguments against all kinds of denialists and also helps us prevent eco-anxiety with information.
We are La Marea!
We started reporting on climate change regularly in 2014. Since then, we have dedicated up to five covers of our magazine (paper and digital) to this topic. In 2015 we created a 'climate newspaper library' in the magazine. Since 2017, lamarea.com has had a similar section, the weekly climate news selection. Since the beginning of 2020, lamarea.com has included a section called Climate in its menu.
A human team!
Alba Mareca: Master's Degree in Gender and Communication from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Specialized in equality issues. Co-author of the contents of the online workshop "Informing about male violence" of La Marea produced by Oxfam Intermón. She has collaborated with Climática since its inception.
Alfredo Almendro: Graphic designer and audiovisual producer specialized in political and corporate communication. Graduate in philosophy and superior technician in image. He has worked in state communication teams of various political parties and public institutions, while developing campaigns for different companies. He currently combines his work coordinating communication at LaMarea with teaching at the Escuela Superior de Diseño in Madrid
subjects such as Advertising and Art Direction.
Atxe: He has been working in drawing and animation since 2005 and in graphic humor since 2013. In this field he currently collaborates with La Marea and CuartoPoder. Author of the book Capitalismo por qué? (Akal, 2019), an illustrated essay, in the key of humor, which analyzes the causes of the discomfort caused by capitalism and leads us to ask ourselves why we should continue to endure it.
Eduardo Robaina: Journalist and photographer He began collaborating with La Marea in 2017. He is currently focused on climate information as part of the Climática team, of which he has been a member since its inception.
Queralt Castillo: Journalist specialized in international relations, ethnic conflicts, literature and travel. Editor of Climática, she also collaborates with Sentit Crític, Público, NTMEP and 5W, among others.
Magda Bandera: Director and co-founder of La Marea. Promoter of the project #PorTodas. She has worked as a reporter for La Vanguardia and Marie Claire among others. Specialized in gender and human rights. Special mention for media in 2020 by the Institut Drets Humans de Catalunya, Human rights Institute of Catalonia (IDHC) (. Good Practices in Non-Sexist Communication 2019 Award from the Associació de Dones Periodistes de Catalunya, Association of women journalists of Catalonia (ADPC) for analyzing and reporting on the consequences of male violence.
