General information

This project is a sensitive insight into the suffering of the underprivileged and the commitment to the struggle for freedom, forbidden love and solitude of a poet: Carlos Álvarez Cruz, one of Spains major socially committed authors of the 20th century. His profound work, both social and intimate, dramatic and ironic, needs to be highlighed and shared for the benefit of a democratic society.
The feature-length documentary directed by Adolfo Dufour about the life and work of Álvarez is narrated from the poet’s own perspective, drawing from his cultural and political legacy. It includes previously unreleased material that illustrate the systematic repression applied by the Franco regime, now largely ignored by the general public yet still important for clarifying the facts of history.
It penetrates the inner world of a person shaped by fear, loss, vulnerability and the repression of individual, sexual and collective freedoms; a silenced, invisibilized condition endured by hundreds of thousands of people. This condition now requires light, image and testimony.

The film's strengths include its well-informed, honest and sincere overview of the poet and his literary, social, and political context. It recreates a period endured by millions who are still alive and who need to revive their collective memory through widespread dissemination. This documentary may help them to find comforting empathy and at the same time teach younger generations about this repressed perspective. The film is a respectful illustration of the intensity and beauty of life, culture, and the struggle for people’s rights.

The project is currently in pre-production. A plethora of documents by and about the poet which trace the passage of time through the Franco dictatorship and the transition to democracy has been analysed and scanned by his family, donated to the Spanish National Library and released pro bono to make the film.

Some of Carlos Álvarez's poems have been set to music and performed by renowned musicians such as Luis Pastor, Rosa León, Ana Belén, Adolfo Celdrán, Elisa Serna, and the Aguaviva band. The music composed by Francisco Otero is another central feature.

Main features and goals of the crowdfunding campaign

The film revolves around four themes:

  • A sensitive look at the suffering of the underprivileged and those who rebel against injustice, set on the same plane as human fellowship.

  • A commitment to his persecuted family, to the struggle for democracy (the reason for his imprisonment), to the Asturian miners imprisoned after the 1964 strikes (for which they named him "Adoptive Son of Mieres" in Carabanchel Prison). And a commitment to the struggle for women's rights: "I sing to you, woman... you who have been forever denigrated...".

  • Forbidden love in an archaic, narrow-minded society.

  • The solitude discovered when all illusion is lost, but which the poet keeps at bay, clinging to the mast of life, accompanied by his audacious, prophetic words.

This film differs from other documentaries and films thanks to the above-mentioned features, succinctly reiterated as an artistic creation developed by the poet himself, instead of interviews with people who knew or studied him. This is enriched by the personal documents revealed for the first time here in a major step towards a correct political reconstruction of the Franco period.

Our objectives are:

  • To expose a hidden reality that a large part of society can empathise with through the poetry, the veracity of the documents and the beauty of the author’s artistic creativity, and in the process, bring culture closer to the general public.

  • To maximise funding through this channel to facilitate a high-quality production.

Motivation and Target Audience

We are motivated by a profound sense of the need for justice and reparation for the victims of the Franco dictatorship and the entire Spanish society that suffered under its oppression. This need remains gagged by fear which, 50 years after the end of the regime, is still keenly felt by many families. The recovery of a society’s democratic memory involves publicising words that arise from oppression, from empathy with common people and the poor. It involves publicising the poetry of those who have been outlawed, poetry that gives voice to all those who at some point have taken courage and struggled to break free.

The target audience of this project is the general public. However, it is particularly intended for those who are sensitive to the repression exercised by the Franco dictatorship and also younger people who, through this film, can learn about these confirmed facts of history.

Why this is important

To address complex issues in a short time frame.
To entertain, be thought-provoking and move audiences. Carlos Álvarez's fondness for the cinema, the expressive imagery of his poetry, his creation of fascinating characters such as Larry Talbot, the poet’s alter ego in "Aullido de licántropo" (Howl of a Werewolf), and the visual quality of his texts dealing with society and culture, allow "Carlos Álvarez: The Werewolf Fellowship" to be narrated from the poet’s own perspective. In this film, all the testimonies and words are spoken or written by Carlos Álvarez himself: a subjective, first-person narrative of his real experience. Facts (what happened) and dreams (illusion, created by imagination) are interwoven in the representation to express Álvarez's essence and the reason underlying his work. Reality is blended with imagination in a quest for truth.

This feature-length documentary is based on his book, Aullido de licántropo, (Werewolf Fellowship), which illustrates the social and political situation of the time, his experience as a victim of the dictatorship, and a society that rebelled against its lack of freedom. Pivotal events such as his father’s execution by Franco's army after the coup against the Republic, his time in punishment cells and his close contact with other political, intellectual and working-class prisoners emerge in the film, painting a portrait of suffering and hope, narrated and sung from the perspective of ordinary citizens.
