General information

This is a workshop designed for children and young people with mental and physics disabilities, which offers them a voice to tell their stories about their relationship with the ocean and surfing, and sharing their daily reality.

Objectives of project:

  • Provide basic notions about documentary techniques.
  • Increase the self-esteem of the participants offering them the opportunity to tell their stories and embody the ideas that are really important to them
  • Make friendships and sustainable creative collaborations between young people or discover ways of being more independent and self-sufficient.
  • Learn techniques for conflict resolution and brain-storming that will be useful in both personal and professional life.
  • Produce documentaries about the relationships of the participants or their subjects with the sea in a creative way
  • Give the opportunity to the youths to see their movies projected on the big screen and side with professional productions of international mold.

Main features and goals of the crowdfunding campaign

HOW
The premise of this project is that cinema isn't only a means of communication, it is also a process, through which filmmakers work in teams, express themselves and tell their stories; we have chosen to expand Fuerte Tribú's mission by including filmmaking as a tool of self-affirmation and expression for disabled people.

Why this is important

WHO and FOR WHO
New Waves Cinema is a collaborative project between Fuerte Tribú, a club that develops sports, social and educational programs which promote surfing for children and grown ups with mental and physical disabilities, and Polifilm Media, a production company based in Scotland that over the past ten years has been using documentary labs to teach communication, team work and conflict resolution through the creative and collaborative process of filmmaking.

Goals of the crowdfunding campaign

WHY
The local funding we were expecting to cover basic costs relating to the course, such as equipment, teaching spaces, specialised support, project coordination, travel costs and production, will not reach us in time, so, in the hope of offering the course for free as originally intended we have decided to turn to crowdfunding as a source of funding.

We hope that a successful pilot project could turn this into a yearly occurrence, supported by local institutions, which will offer these young people the opportunity to learn, express themselves and develop their self-confidence.

Team and experience

FUERTE TRIBU SPORTS CLUB
The FUERTE TRIBU sports club was founded in 2009 and it has been developing sports, educational and social projects that encourage surf amongst children, youths and the families in the communities of Puerto del Rosario and La Oliva, with a special focus on people with permanent and temporary physical conditions, for people with ADHD (Attention Deficiency and Hyperactivity Disorder) and for people with mental, intellectual or physical disabilities.

We know that surfing is a tool to promote personal abilities and favours the search for normalisation for people with disabilities trough leisure, water activities and sports in a natural environment.

There is a broad background to the development of the Adapted Surf program including the Solo Surf in Cadíz and Play and Train in Catalonia, in the summer period in Fuerteventura and Cotillo Beach over the past 4 years.

POLIFILM MEDIA – Tomás Sheridan
Tomás Sheridan is a director, producer and teacher of documentary films who's been using cinema labs for the past ten years to encourage conflict resolution, team work and building self-esteem in vulnerable groups.

In the past five years, since the founding of Polifilm Media, Tomás has discovered that documentary isn't only and effective tool to reach the public, it is also a powerful instrument for the filmmakers to broaden their perspectives during the process.
Apart form the production of short and medium-length content that has been to over fifty festivals and has been broadcast internationally, Polifilm now focuses on workshops for groups as diverse as special needs schools in Scotland, Refugee Centres in Southern Italy, University students in Italy and Scotland, Summer Schools and at various festivals such as Lago, Concorto and La Guarimba Film Festival.

GIUSY FANELLI
Giusy Fanelli is a photographer, videographer and project coordinator.
She has worked for ten years in graphics and advertising, starting in the fashion industry and moving on to lithography, magazines and packaging in Milan, Bologna and Turin.

In the past few years she has been free-lancing and working as Genus Administrator at Apple whilst continuing her work as a photographer and videographer for music bands.

After her encounter with Pilar, the director of the Fuerte Tribú sports centre, she decided to move to Fuerteventura to work with people with disabilities, proposing and promoting projects and working to deliver them.
